During summer 2016 at the Kent State University New York Fashion Studio, four of us collaborated on a fashion photography project for a class called Fashion Image. Our assignment was to build an editorial photo shoot using a collection designed and produced by Camille Winslow for her final senior design collection at Kent State. The class taught us about both sides of the fashion photography process. This included everything from receiving the garments, styling, securing a photoshoot location and working and collaborating with others. Part of our project was to work in conjunction with two students from the New York Film Academy (NYFA) who were responsible for actually taking the photographs. Each of our team members was given a role: Creative Director, Fashion Editor, Stylist, and Production Manager.

Prior to meeting with the NYFA team, we developed a concept and story around Camille’s collection. We had to complete a hair, makeup and overall mood board to capture our thoughts and vision we had for the photoshoot. Upon meeting with the NYFA team, we presented them with our preliminary ideas that ended up changing and evolving each time we met with them. We had multiple pre-production meetings with our NYFA counterparts before the day of the photoshoot where we discussed the location, lighting, and ability to accurately display our theme of “Inner Rebel.” In addition to this, we also had a model fitting and pre-production shoot to make sure things went smoothly on photoshoot day. For our shoot we wanted our model to represent a strong, independent woman with a hidden rebellious side.
On July 12th, 2016 the hair, makeup, styling and photoshoot took place at the NYFA studio near Battery Park. Overall, we had a great experience working as a team with the model, NYFA students and designer. It was a team effort that led us to improve our knowledge and skills in the fashion photography industry. This project also helped us gain some connections in the extremely difficult industry that all four of us strive to become a part of.
